2 - Characteristics of the Thermal
spas of Bormio
2-1 Bagni Nuovi (New Baths)
Open all year round. This spa dates back to 1836; it was closed for a long time due to restoration works
that have retained its original liberty style and reopened to the public in 2003.
The center is divided into 4 sectors with over 30 different amenities:
- Giardini di Venere (Gardens of Venus): an open-air route, ideal for regenerating body and mind. It
is exposed to the sun all day long. You can plunge into the natural hot springs of the thermal park and
then lie in the sun while breathing the fresh crisp mountain air.
- Grotta di Nettuno (the Grotto of Neptune): A detoxicating route through a modern and functional minimalist
tunnel built in 2004 that connects the semi-basement to the gardens outside. It is equipped with specific
amenities for the improvement of body circulation and deep cleansing of the skin.
- Bagni di Giove (Jupiter Baths): Indoor water route, ideal for revitalizing, regenerating and tonifying
the body. The route traces back to the 800s and runs through the semi-basement under vaulted arches where
the first thermal establishment of the New Baths was situated.
- Torre di Cupido (Cupid’s Tower): an ancient hexagonal tower dating back to the 18th century
with two thermal baths. The internal bath offers you the opportunity to enjoy your immersions in total
privacy, while the external one offers a breathtaking view of the park of the Resort. Please apply to
the reception desk for access to the structure.

2-2 Bagni Vecchi (Old Baths)
The
pools are situated at variable altitudes along the slopes of Mount Reit where the hot thermal waters gush
out. Its historical atmosphere makes you travel back through time with its century-old grottos, already
known since Roman times. The entrance ticket includes a route divided into 6 sectors with 36 different
thermal offers for a complete remise en forme:
- San Martino sweating grotto: The Sweating Grotto, constructed in 1827, is a natural humid sauna, exclusive
and unique of its kind and consists of a detoxicating route winding through two tunnels that penetrate
the rock for more than 50 metres. The typical environment of the ancient Roman thermal baths (Tepidarium,
Calidarium, Laconicum, Frigidarium) can be found inside this grotto, although the route is traditionally
proposed as a Dantesque journey to the otherworld, ranging from the mild temperature of Heaven and the
heat of Purgatory to the broil of Hell. It is advisable to cover the route at a slow pace up to Purgatory
to allow the body to get accustomed to the temperature (up to 48°C) and increasing humidity (up to
95%).
- Bagni Medieval (Medieval Baths): a regenerating wellness route, situated in the oldest part of the
Medieval Fortress with four different synergic solutions that exalt the peculiarities of the thermal waters
(mineral salts and sulpho-bacteria.)
- The open-air swimming pool, where you can enjoy a mild anti stress bath and vigorous hydromassages
thanks to numerous nozzles that push the water out at low pressure. You can stay pleasantly immersed in
the hot waters (38°C - 40°C), even in cold or snowy weather. A spacious Solarium is located near
the little church. You can enjoy a magnificent view on the Conca of Bormio and the surrounding Retiche
Alps.
- Bagni Romani (Roman Baths): two wide contiguous baths were constructed inside a grotto already in
use since pre-Roman times, where one of the nine thermal water springs rich in natural sulpho - bacteria
(natural mud) gush out. The Solarium in front of the grottos of the Roman Baths hosts a large wooden bathtub,
completely renovated, which belonged to the Bath of the Archduchess (a building that rose on a field near
the Roman Baths and now destroyed) until the end of the 19th century.
- Bagni Imperiali (Imperial Baths): a tonifying route to recover physical well-being and forget the
stress of everyday life while regenerating the body, especially after sport activities. The Bagni Imperiali
were constructed in 1800 and rehabilitated in 1997.
- Bagni dell'Arciduchessa (Baths of the Archduchess): the ideal route with reinvigorating effects on
skin, spirit and mind, with a vast choice of amenities to enhance complete regeneration of the skin while
leaving it soft and elastic. The saunas and relax areas are perfect places where you can unwind and relax
your mind completely. The Bagni dell’Arciduchessa were constructed after the opening of the Stelvio
Road (1825) to guarantee adequate privacy to the members of the Royal family of Austria - Hungary. The
baths underwent restoration works and were reopened to the public in December 2005.
